Young children seem to be magnetically attracted to sausages, chicken nuggets, fish fingers, chips and tomato sauce! These favourite foods have energy, vitamins and minerals so that they can contribute to their overall nutritional requirements. However, they should not dominate the weekly menu because they do not have all the nutrients required for health.

A wide range of foods is the key to good nutrition and is the ideal goal. Weeks may pass when you don't succeed on the variety stakes. However don't despair. Tasting one new food each week can be a useful household rule to help with getting enough variety into children's diets.

Sweets and treats
Snacking is an important way for young children to meet their energy needs, but the type of snack is important. Emphasis should be placed on nutrient rich snacks. Sweets and confectionery foods should be reserved for occasional treats a few times a week, but not every day. Remember pound for pound, children need more energy than adults and sweets can play a role in helping to meet these very considerable energy needs. However as with everything in life there are limits or a more a familiar way of putting this is 'everything in moderation'.

The one major concern for young children who eat a lot of sweets is their teeth. Frequent sugar and sweet consumption will lead to tooth decay unless the teeth are washed at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride and the number of occasions on which the sweets are eaten are reduced.

Your child's appetite can vary from time to time and this is quite normal. Some days children may eat more than usual and other days their meals may be left on the plate. Snacking
For many children, particularly the faddy eater, snacking during the day can be an important part of normal eating.

The types of snacks chosen should be high in energy and nutrients but not too sweet or salty. Snacking should not be considered a bad habit because in fact many young children rely on snacks for at least a third of their energy needs. It is the type of snack that is important.

If your child is aged between two and five years, you may be wondering if he/she is eating the right kind of food. By this stage, they have developed their own eating pattern, hopefully one that you are, for the most part, happy with.

But parents often have questions and nagging doubts, especially about food issues like how much sweets, confectionery and fizzy drinks should they be allowed. There is also concern about the lack of variety in the food that children like best - sometimes you think they will turn into a fish finger if they eat any more of them. And then there is the fussy eater, who seems to eat nothing at all.

Breakfast

Eating breakfast is a very important habit to establish in early childhood. Many young people, especially girls during early puberty/teens skip breakfast and this is likely to affect their health in future years. Intakes of calcium, iron and folate are particularly affected when breakfast is left out.
It is important to remember that it takes young children between 15 - 30 mins. to eat breakfast, so try to get up that little bit earlier and leave enough time to eat before you go out the door.

MILK - Type
Formula milk is not needed after one year of age.

Between the ages of one and two years, whole milk should be used for milk drinks. Low fat or light milk can be used in cooking, but because it is lower in energy (calories), it should not be used for drinks until children are at least two years of age.

Skimmed milk should be avoided up to five years of age, as it is very low in calories and can also be low in fat-soluble vitamins.

OTHER DRINKS.
From one year onwards, drinks should be from a feeding cup rather than a bottle. Milk and water are the most tooth-friendly drinks for children. If using fruit juices, they should be unsweetened and well-diluted (1 measure of juice to 4 or 5 measures of water).

Specific points to remember for This Stage

MILK - Amount needed:
As an infant grows in its first year, the amount of milk required decreases as the amount of solid food they eat increases. By the age of one year, children should be encouraged to have approximately one pint of milk a day, less if they also eat yogurt and/or cheese on a daily basis. Breastfed infants will take the amount of milk that they need.

A common problem that occurs in young children is an over-reliance on milk in the diet. Although milk is a very nutritious part of any diet, too much milk may lead to a decrease in children's appetite for solid foods. This in turn can lead to:

1.Constipation.

At any age, constipation is prevented by having enough fibre and clear fluids in our diet. A child who takes more milk every day than is needed may become constipated because their fibre intake is low (if the milk is filling them and they are eating little solid food) and/or they are not drinking enough water based drinks.

2.Anaemia.

Infants who do not get enough iron in their diet can develop anaemia. At birth, babies have enough iron stores to last approximately six months. From that age iron-rich weaning foods, such as pureed meat, should be included in a child's diet to prevent stores running low.

By the age of one year, a child's intake of iron-rich foods should be well established. Milk is not an iron source, therefore if a child is being filled by milk drinks, they may eat less solid foods, and run a risk of not getting the iron that they need each day.

NOTE: Once a child is eating a variety of different foods every day, including approximately 1 pint of milk plus other drinks, anaemia and constipation should not be a problem

Generally:

Infants and young children grow rapidly but have small stomachs so they need regular small amounts of nourishing foods.

Infants should be on a mixed diet by one year. Offer them foods from the four main food groups every day

2. Fruit and vegetables
3. Cereals, breads and potatoes
4. Dairy foods.

As regular small meals are best at this age, children may also need nourishing snacks in between regular meal times. Examples include peeled fruit, yogurt, bread or small crackers, cheese cubes or cheese slices. Children should not be left alone when eating finger foods in case they might choke.

Get your children into the habit of eating breakfast by eating with them.

Before the age of one year children should be encouraged to drink out of a beaker or cup and not a bottle
*
Children at this age will begin to want to feed themselves - this should be encouraged but be prepared for a proportion of the food missing the target and landing on the floor! In addition, mealtimes are going to take longer.

During this year, children should be moving towards eating the same food at mealtimes that all the family are having.

Practical feeding tips

Some babies will want to get involved in feeding themselves and this should be encouraged. However you need to come to the table prepared with plenty of damp kitchen towel. Also, if you can get a large sheet of plastic in the pound shop or an art shop it will be well worth it. There is no point worrying about the floor covering because there is excellent potential for it to be destroyed during these early weeks of feeding. So, my advice is cover it up and enjoy mealtimes.
*
Infants and children need time to eat. When they are really hungry meals can be eaten in just a few minutes. However, more often than not it can take quite a while (15-30) minutes. Make sure to leave enough time for feeding. This may mean getting up earlier in the morning, especially if you have to leave home at a particular time- for work, for a school run or an appointment.
*
Plastic bibs are great. Simply rinse under the tap and they are ready for the next meal. At this early stage a bib is essential at every meal.
*
Start to use a beaker for drinks from the age of six months. It may be quite a while before your baby gets the hang of it - another good reason to cover the floor!
*
Aim to make 'family meals' as opposed to something for the baby and something for the adults. Perhaps the baby won't have all the seasoning in their meal (no salt or sugar should be added to a baby's meal) or it may be the case that they will have the same vegetables and potato as you, but not the rest of the meal, for now. However, by the time they reach age 2 they should be eating the same food as the family. So, from age six months on keep this goal in mind and aim towards it.

Range of food
The range of foods that are suitable at this stage will broaden to include the following:

Wheat and rye. This will now mean that bread and crackers can be introduced

Baby porridge is now suitable. This may seem a little confusing. The labels on the packets of baby porridge currently say suitable from four months. However, this has recently been reviewed by an expert body that say porridge oats may come in contact with traces of gluten during manufacturing and therefore porridge is not suitable as a weaning food until after six months
*
Cow's milk can be added to breakfast cereal after the age of six months. It can also be added to meals but it should not be given as a drink until after one year
*
Fromage frais (e.g.petit filous) is also suitable from six months
*
Soft raw fruits such as banana, kiwi, pear and melon (farewell to the sieve!)
*
Well-cooked eggs so that scrambled egg and toast can be introduced at breakfast or for tea. Soft eggs can be given after one year.

Finger food
When babies want to begin feeding themselves, finger foods are very popular. Sticks or cubes of cheese are nutritious finger snacks, but be prepared to find some of it mashed into the floor!(and hair!!) Other popular finger foods include:

As your baby passes the six-month milestone of development, nutritional guidelines change slightly which makes mealtimes a little easier. Also the range of foods suitable from six months is greater.

As you see your baby growing there is the great feeling of satisfaction that you are doing a good job. So, well done!

Here we highlight the new nutritional issues for your baby:

N.B.Weaning, in this context is weaning your baby onto solid food not about weaning off the breast or bottle which will continue beyond this stage.

Consistency of food
Once weaning is established food can be blended or mashed as opposed to pureed. Potatoes become gluey when they are blended, so, it is a good idea to mash potatoes and add them to blended vegetables and meat.

At eight to ten months, move gradually from blended to mashed food. Soft lumpy meals are suitable when babies learn to chew (not necessarily when they get their first teeth because often this can be much later in some infants). You will know when a lumpy consistency suits, simply because your child will not swallow lumpy food until they are ready.

This is an important transition for your baby, try not to push your baby, be sure to follow your his/her lead and keep trying at regular intervals until they will happily eat meals that have been mashed. Every infant will progress at their own pace. (It will be a great relief not to have to clean the food processor any more even if it was only in use once or twice a week!)

Different Foods for Babies

First Foods
The introduction of solids to a baby's diet is an exciting but somewhat daunting time for parents. Here are some facts and tips about the different types of foods suitable for young babies' aged 4-6 months.

Milk
Breast milk is nutritionally the best choice of milk for an infant, however if you are unable to breast-feed your baby or choose not to then formula milk is the alternative.

There are different types of formula milk and different brands - all of which meet nutritional standards set by the EU. Formula milks can be whey based or casein based. Often 'very hungry' babies are put onto the casein based formula as this can be a more satisfying feed.

Ordinary cow's milk (whole, fresh milk) can be used in small quantities such as the milk you put on their cereal at breakfast or to correct the consistency of spoon feeds. However it should not be used as the main drink until your baby reaches 1 year principally because its mineral content is too concentrated.

If you are using formula milk in bottles it is important to follow the instructions exactly and you should not add anything to the bottle such as rice, sugar or rusks.

Eggs
Scrambled, poached and boiled eggs are all suitable from four months but they must be well cooked - both the yolk and white must be solid. If there is a history of allergy in the family it is a good idea to delay the introduction of eggs until after six months.

Fruit and vegetables
When fruit and vegetables are first introduced, they should be sieved so that the fibrous part of the food is not given initially. However, by six months, a puree consistency for fruit and vegetables is fine, so a blender will produce the correct consistency from lightly cooked fruit and vegetables.

Drinks

Milk
Infants will drink 4-8 fl.ozs. (110-220 ml) of milk at any one time (i.e. in a single bottle). Up until the age of 1 year, they need breast milk or about one pint (500 ml) of formula milk each day, as their main drink. Give this in a way that suits your baby's appetite e.g. 3 or 4 feeds a day.

Water
Tap water, which has been boiled and cooled, can be given as a drink. Natural mineral water or effervescent water is not suitable for infants. However, other bottled waters, including spring water are suitable once they are boiled and cooled before use.

Other fruit juices
Baby fruit juices and herbal drinks should not replace milk in your baby's diet, but they can be useful especially in hot weather to quench thirst.

Drinks not recommended:

Tea and coffee - prevent iron from being absorbed and for this reason are unsuitable for children.

Soft drinks, cola and squash do not contain enough nourishment and yet are very filling - for this reason they are not recommended.

Bottle Feeding

Bottle-feeding requires more equipment!

Essential:

Bottles
When your baby is small, they will probably take up to eight feeds a day, or more. Bottle sizes vary - you can buy 4oz , 6oz or 9oz bottles.

Think about the amount of bottle washing you will be doing and the number of feeds baby will need. Then think about how much time you will have on your hands - little or none! As a guideline, most sterilisers take six large (9oz) bottles (varies so check).

Bear in mind, baby will only take 4 oz bottles for a short time, so six 9 oz bottles is probably better value than buying small bottles and increasing bottle size according to the amount baby needs.

Teats and rings
You will need a teat and ring for each bottle, usually supplied with initial bottle purchase. However, watch out for wear on teats and replace them accordingly.

Some babies like milk that flows freely, others like to suck. Best advice if you don't know what baby likes is to start with a slow flow teat and progress to medium and then fast. Watch this, too slow a teat can frustrate a hungry baby, too fast can almost 'drown' them and make them gulp (giving them wind).

Bottle and teat brush
The teat brush cleans milk residue from the teat effectively. Wash bottles and teats in warm soapy water, rinse well and sterilise.

Steriliser
Options are steam, microwave and chemical.
Steam sterilisers are convenient and require nothing but water. However, de-scaling sachets of citric acid are necessary to clean the steriliser (recommended every 2 weeks, but check your own).If you choose the chemical steriliser, you will also need to buy either sterilising liquid or tablets to add to the water.

Optional:

Bottle warmer
You can heat bottles in a bowl of boiling water. Most restaurants will heat a bottle. Battery or plug-in bottle warmers are convenient. Options are available to plug into car lighters, handy when out and about.

Bottle carriers (insulated)

Disposable bottles

Bibs (Velcro fasteners are easiest)

When making bottles always use COOLED BOILED WATER, never tap water and never boiling water - which can break down the essential protein in baby milk. This is one of the reasons why warming bottles in microwaves is not recommended.

Moving on to Solid Food

Starting on solid food means a change in equipment again.

Essential:

Feeding Spoons (at least 2)
If you use an ordinary teaspoon, it is possible (and likely) that little gums will be hurt. Baby will eventually want to feed herself; having two spoons means that you can feed her with one, while she plays with the other, instead of competing for spoon ownership.

Bibs
If you didn't use bibs before, you will need them now. There are various fastening options - tie, poncho (over-the-head) or Velcro. Velcro is usually the easiest to do one-handed! Disposable types are also available, which require no fastening. Fabric is softer for small babies but consider moving to the plastic, wipeable types in a few months.

Ice-cube tray
When baby starts to eat solid food, a carrot will provide three or four meals! Fill your ice-cube tray with whatever you cook and freeze. Then just pop the required number of cubes out and defrost! Simple.

High chair
As long as baby is safely propped up, you can feed him anywhere, perhaps, even sitting on your knee (this may prove awkward though). Once baby is beginning to sit up on his own and demand attention, it's probably time to get a high chair. There are a number of options here and it is best to see which will suit you. Look out for these basic things - wipeable fabric cover, large tray, safety harness and easy folding. The more expensive options include height adjustable seat and seat recline positions. Some even fold down into racing cars or little desks. Perhaps, the seat that attaches to your kitchen table is the style for you (not suitable for all tables).

Mouli (or blender)
A mouli is handy for small amounts of food but time consuming for large amounts. Think before you buy. Are you the kind of person who will prepare food well in advance and freeze it? Or will you just prepare food every day for baby? You may already have a kitchen blender and this will probably suffice.

Optional:

Feeding bowl
Special feeding bowls are not necessary until baby learns to throw - then opt for plastic. Choose plastic dishes with lids that you can bring out with you or freeze. Check out the kitchenware department of your local store.

Essential:

Nursing bra
If you breast-feed exclusively you will only need a nursing bra (get fitted for one AFTER the baby is born) and breast pads to soak up leaks.

Breast pads (washable or disposable)
Breast pads are available as either disposable or washable versions. It's a good idea to have a supply of both (you may not get around to washing pads as frequently as you think!). You will probably need about 6 - 8 pairs (or 12 - 16 pads) per day when baby is small but this should reduce as feeds become further apart.

Breast-feeding means not having to mix formula and sterilise bottles - or does it?

Optional :

If you go back to work, or leave your baby with a carer, you will need to supply expressed milk in bottles, so you will require bottle-feeding equipment as well.

Storage bags - available (that fit a special bottle design) for storing expressed milk but freezer bags or ice cube bags (easier to judge how much milk is in each bag) work equally as well.

Breast Pump (manual or electric) - necessary if you are going to be away from baby. Electric pumps are quick to use and are available to hire. The bottle and attachments supplied with hire (for you to keep) also double as a manual breast pump.

If you decide against electric, you can opt for a manual breast pump. These are normally a bottle with a pump attachment. Avent do a manual pump that fits on to any of their three sized bottles. A manual pump is useful if you're not at home and need to express .

Introducing new food:

The 'first foods' which are suitable for an infant vary widely but their common feature is that they are bland and contain no fibre. Your baby's system is too immature to cope with fibre at this stage. The most common first foods include baby rice, mashed potato, pureed apple or pear, pureed turnip or carrot.

Introducing food into your baby's diet may begin between the ages of 4 and 6 months. This age group may need the extra nourishment from a variety of foods to help them grow.

Signs that your baby is ready to start solids include:

§ Your baby has teeth

§ Your baby can sit up unaided

§ Your baby has lost their tongue thrust reflex (this reflex pushes food out of their mouth)

§ Your baby is able to grasp food and will bring it to their mouth

§ Your baby is still hungry after several days of increasing feeds in case of a growth spurt

One of these signs on their own is not enough to start on solids - rather you are looking for several of them.

Always introduce new foods one at a time, and leave a gap of a day between new foods.

This is recommended so that if a particular food causes an adverse reaction such as an allergy, you will know immediately which food is the culprit.

When you are ready to begin, choose a quiet and unhurried time. Introduce a small spoon of a new food-say baby rice- after a breast or bottle-feed.

The meal patterns of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not apply at this stage. 4-6 spoon feeds of a variety of foods is what you should be aiming for and this will take a few weeks.

Consistency of meals

The consistency of food at this stage should be smooth - no lumps whatsoever

It will take a number of attempts before baby will swallow the new texture of their first foods so be patient and give lots of encouragement.

After a few weeks you will have built up a wide range of foods that your baby will enjoy. Remember they will not take to everything the first time they taste it so be patient and continue to build up the variety of foods your baby will enjoy.

A recent report by The Global Initiative for Asthma (Gina) found that almost a third of children aged 13 and 14 in Scotland, Wales and England report experiencing asthma symptoms - more than anywhere else in the world.

And a quarter of UK adults are affected by asthma to some degree - double the number in France and nearly three times the number of Italian adults with the disease.

These figures highlight the seriousness of asthma in the UK, and in particular childhood asthma, yet despite this, there is a severe shortage of government-funded research into the causes of the condition.

Asthma experts say much more research needs to be carried out into what triggers asthma, and why the numbers affected are increasing.

Asthma has become more common over the last 30 years, but we still don't know exactly why,' said Philippa Major, Assistant Director of Research with the National Asthma Campaign. 'The Campaign would like to see more funding in this area in order to discover why the UK rates are so much higher.'

Dr Chris Griffiths, of the Barts and the Royal London Hospitals, said: "It may be that something is switching asthma on in susceptible individuals, probably in the first few years of life.

"There is a range of suspects. It could be outdoor pollution, smoking, the diet, the way we seal ourselves in our houses more. "There is no one factor, it is going to be a combination of things."

What if my child has an asthma attack?

1. Give your child their usual reliever inhaler straight away, preferably using a spacer

2. Keep calm and try to relax your child as much as possible sit your child down, don't lie them down rest your child's hands on their knees for support try to slow your child's breathing down as this will make them less exhausted

3. Wait 5-10 minutes

4. If the symptoms disappear, your child should be able to go back to whatever they were doing

5. If the reliever has no effect, call the doctor or ambulance

6. Continue to give your child their reliever inhaler every few minutes until help arrives preferably using a spacer. It is not possible to overdose on reliever.

Do not be afraid of causing a fuss, even at night.

If your child is admitted to hospital or an Accident & Emergency department, because of their asthma, take details of their treatment with you.

You should also make an appointment with your doctor or practice nurse after your child is discharged from hospital so that you can review your child's treatment to avoid the situation arising again.

Tips for treating young children

Giving asthma treatment to a young child can sometimes be difficult but it needn't be a traumatic experience for either of you.

It may help if you reassure your child by pretending to take the treatment yourself or giving it to a favourite toy.

Distraction with music or videos can also be useful. Praise and encourage the smallest achievement. Try to remain positive!

What is asthma?
Asthma is a condition that affects the airways – the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs.

When your child comes into contact with something that irritates their airways (an asthma trigger) his/her airways will become narrower, making it more difficult to breathe. The muscles around the walls of the airways will start to tighten; the lining of the airway becomes inflamed; and sometimes the mucus that cleans and protects the lining of the airways builds up and gets in the way of the air that is trying to reach the lungs.

What are asthma symptoms?
Asthma symptoms can vary. You may find that your child:

coughs or wheezes, particularly during the night, after exercise or with a cold (although not all children with asthma will wheeze)

has a cough that will not go away and keeps coming back
*
finds it difficult to breathe and feels breathless
*
complains of having a tight feeling in their chest or a sore tummy
*
feels tired, does not run around as much as usual, or needs to be carried a lot

Dyslexia

The word 'dyslexia' comes from the Greek and means 'difficulty with words'

Dyslexia is a difference in the brain area that deals with language. It affects the under-lying skills that are needed for learning to read, write and spell. Brain imaging techniques show that dyslexic people process information differently.

Indications of dyslexia:

If a child has several of these indications, further investigation should be made. The child may be dyslexic, or there may be other reasons. This is not a checklist.

1. Persisting factors.
There are many persisting factors in dyslexia,which can appear from an early age. They will still be noticeable when the dyslexic child leaves school.
These include:
*
Obvious 'good' and 'bad' days, for no apparent reason,
*
Confusion between directional words, e.g. up/down, in/out,
*
Difficulty with sequence, e.g. coloured bead sequence,later with days of the week or numbers,
*
A family history of dyslexia/reading difficulties.

2. Pre-school.

Has persistent jumbled phrases, e.g. 'cobbler's club' for 'toddler's club'
*
Use of substitute words e.g. 'lampshade' for 'lamppost'.
*
Inability to remember the label for known objects, e.g. 'table, chair'.
*
Difficulty learning nursery rhymes and rhyming words, e.g. 'cat, mat, sat'.
*
Later than expected speech development.

Non-language indicators.
*
May have walked early but did not crawl - was a 'bottom shuffler' or 'tummy wriggler'.
*
Persistent difficulties in getting dressed efficiently and putting shoes on the correct feet.
*
Enjoys being read to but shows no interest in letters or words.
*
Is often accused of not listening or paying attention.
*
Excessive tripping, bumping into things and falling over.
*
Difficulty with catching, kicking or throwing a ball; with hopping and/or skipping.
*
Difficulty with clapping a simple rhythm.

3. Primary school age.

Has particular difficulty with reading and spelling.
Puts letters and figures the wrong way round.
*
Has difficulty remembering tables, alphabet, formulae etc.
*
Leaves letters out of words or puts them in the wrong order.
*
Still occasionally confuses 'b' and 'd' and words such as 'no/on'.
*
Still needs to use fingers or marks on paper to make simple calculations.
*
Poor concentration.
*
Has problems understanding what he/she has read.
*
Takes longer than average to do written work.
Problems processing language at speed.

Non-language indicators:

Has difficulty with tying shoe laces, tie, dressing.
*
Has difficulty telling left from right, order of days of the week,months of the year etc.
*
Surprises you because in other ways he/she is bright and alert.
*
Has a poor sense of direction and still confuses left and right.
*
Lacks confidence and has a poor self image.

4. 12 or over

As for primary schools, plus:

Still reads inaccurately.
*
Still has difficulties in spelling.
*
Needs to have instructions and telephone numbers repeated.
*
Gets 'tied up' using long words, e.g. 'preliminary', 'philosophical'.
*
Confuses places, times, dates.
*
Has difficulty with planning and writing essays.
*
Has difficulty processing complex language or long series of instructions at speed.

Non-language indicators:

Has poor confidence and self-esteem.
*
Has areas of strength as well as weakness.

Your baby is ready for birth, the head is engaged

During the last week of pregnancy your baby grows to fill the whole uterus

He or she no longer has a lot of room to manoeuvre, but will still be moving well

Mother

Your lower abdomen feels heavier but you will probably have noticed that it is a little easier to breathe. This is because the baby has moved further down.

Mild complaints at this stage are swollen ankles and frequent urination

The baby has less room to move and the movements feel like thumps

The Braxton Hicks contractions increase towards the end of pregnancy. They may bother you and disrupt your sleep.

You should be feeling at least 10 kicks or movements in 12 hours. If you have any worries ring the hospital, midwife, or doctor.

Your baby may not arrive until some time after the due date. Try to relax and store up as much energy as you can because you will be kept busy after the birth.

The baby continues to grow and moves down in the pelvis getting ready to be born.

Braxton Hicks contractions continue. Now is the time to have your bag ready for hospital!

In the final few months your womb will grow in size. It is extended upwards close to your ribs. This causes pressure which sometimes makes breathing more difficult during activity

You may also pass urine more frequently as your baby is pressing on your bladder.

Your pelvic ligaments are softening and stretching in preparation for the birth which may cause some pain and backache.

You may also experience mixed feelings as the birth is approaching, both fear and impatience and wondering how you will handle the birth and motherhood. Remember women are designed to have babies

Your antenatal classes will have prepared you for labour and delivery and remember to practice your breathing techniques and pelvic floor exercises. You're almost there!

Swollen feet, legs, and fingers at the end of the day is common.

You may have difficulty sleeping.

Swollen legs and feet is usually harmless, as long as your blood pressure is normal and you do not have protein in your urine. Put your feet up when you are resting. Wear shoes that are comfortable.

If you have difficulty sleeping, try making yourself comfortable in bed at night with pillows, tucking one between your legs and one under your tummy

Most women gain between 26-33 pounds (12-15kgs) during pregnancy. Pregnant women gain weight at different rates so don't be alarmed if you are a little bigger than your pregnant friends.

If you are bleeding at any time, have abdominal pain, are worried about your baby's movements do tell your midwife or doctor.

Do think about breastfeeding your baby. It is the best start you will ever give your baby in life.
